LAST week my son grew five inches. It made him smile as he measured himself up against his much taller friend. It made me smile too, that my extraordinary son could do something ordinary like boast about his tallness. When I helped him to put on his jeans yesterday, we both laughed because they're too short now. In truth, I wanted to cry.

My 12-year old son Devinn will never play rugby or hang-glide or run a marathon but, today, his chances of living longer and with less pain are far better than they were four weeks ago.
