IT MAY be the height of fashion in Afghanistan, but political writer Peter Oborne found that his handmade, brown striped waistcoat did not cut the mustard at snooty Mayfair restaurant Le Gavroche.
Sherborne-educated Oborne, author of a well-regarded biography of Alastair Campbell, was refused entry unless he removed the offending attire and put on a jacket and tie. There was a contretemps as Oborne loudly refused, turning heads among Le Gavroche's Pounds 90a- head diners. 'I thought I was looking quite distinguished, in a beautifully tailored waistcoat that I had just had made for me in the Afghan city of Herat,' Oborne tells me. 'But the restaurant's management very peremptorily refused to let me in unless I wore a smelly old blazer. I was quite unkeen to change, and I did express myself a little forcefully.
