THE Irish Consumers' Association (ICA) is calling on people to demand that banks stop the rip-off practice of charging twice for bouncing cheques.

Customers are charged up to 12.70 if they write a cheque with insufficient funds in their account. On top of that, those who receive the cheque are hit with a penalty, even though it is not their fault. ICA chairman Michael Kilcoyne said customers need to go to their bank managers;demand that this practice is stopped. 'They should talk to their bank;tell them that if they continue to charge the fees, they will take their custom elsewhere,' he said.
