IT COMES to something when the sanctimonious United Nations can accuse Britain of hypocritical double standards over the way it enforces the law. But when the issue is drugs and the indulgence shown to cocaine-sniffing 'celebrities', doesn't the UN have a point? Last week, its drug control agency pointed out that this is one of the worst countries in Europe for cocaine abuse and warned that 'celebrity drug offenders can profoundly influence public attitudes'.

Now the UN's drugs tsar, Antonio Maria Costa, returns to the attack by denouncing 'coke-snorting fashionistas' such as Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse, who encourage a drugs trade that causes untold misery, corruption, and violence in Africa and South America.
