WILL there be a General Election in October? That is the excited chatter among the political and media classes as they prepare to leave for Cornwall, Tuscany, France or Spain. Journalists, of course, love the idea of an early contest since it would give them a lot to write about.

The question I would prefer to address is: Should there be a General Election in October? Is it in the interests of the people of this country to have one? On balance I think the answer is: No.
