THE brave widow of a British soldier killed in Afghanistan yesterday became the first to receive the new Elizabeth Cross - marking the nation's debt of gratitude for her terrible loss.

Karen Upton and her two young children received the medal in a highly emotional ceremony on the day that hundreds of mourners gathered to see Warrant Officer Sean Upton, 35, buried with full military honours.
