Elizabeth Emanuel whirls into her studio, a vibrant mass of colourful hair extensions and dramatic frills, trailing scarves and shopping bags. I'm reminded of an exotic, noisy bird; chirruping, fluttering, swooping upon a rich variety of fabric samples that have just been delivered.

'Working with fabrics is a bit like layering a painting with oils, letting the fabric dictate the way the dress is going to work,' she says, fingering the stunning golden samples. 'I love colour and textures. I get a real buzz when I see beautiful colours.' Elizabeth is certainly buzzing. She's just opened a new studio in London with money inherited from her parents, and is full of ideas and new designs. She has endured much in the past years - bankruptcy, divorce, the death of both parents - but she's a survivor, a doer. 'I wish the world was perfect, but it's not,' she says. 'But I can try and make my little bit of it perfect.' Elizabeth creates romance with her clothes, draping her colourful dreams about the likes of Elizabeth Hurley.

The two Liz's have known one another for years. When Elizabeth visits Los Angeles, she stays with Liz's great friend Julia Verdin. She arrives with trunkloads of clothes and the three of them play dressing up. 'Liz is so fun and bubbly,' says Elizabeth. 'And great to dress, because she looks absolutely amazing. We have so much fun in LA, dressing up and hanging out.
