No wonder Jilly Cooper based a heroine on her, says Gavanndra Hodge Emma Sergeant is standing in the gallery of the Fine Art Society surrounded by her latest exhibition. She is wearing exotic silver slippers with pointy, upturned toes and a heavy, embroidered red waistcoat with bits of bone and various other random objects dangling from it. She looks more like a gypsy than a glamorous society artist. 'It belonged to a Polish peasant farmer,' she says, chuckling. She has a throaty laugh, the result of an unsavoury habit: 'Every morning after my lemon and hot water I have a cigar.' To commission a portrait by Sergeant is the ultimate luxury.

She has a touch of the Jilly Cooper heroine about her bohemian and beautiful with a trail of exotic paramours in her wake. Jilly even consulted her while researching her art-world bonkbuster, Pandora. 'We spent a couple of sessions together, rambling on about artistic process. I loved the book.

One of the characters is described as having an Emma Sergeant portrait hanging in their house.
