MANY doctors are puzzled by The Lancet's abject apology for publishing Dr Andrew Wakefield's 'fatally flawed' research on MMR. Editor Dr Richard Horton published a letter from Dr Wakefield six years ago which dealt with most of the conflict of interest allegations (his contact with the parents of autistic children). The Horton mea culpa improves his diminished standing among medical bigwigs and increases his prospects of being 'taken' i.e. accepted by the notoriously Establishment-minded knighthoods committee.
