Summary

BEFORE leaving Number 10, Tony Blair is expected to arrange a title in her own right for his wife, Cherie possibly Baroness Booth of Crosby, the Merseyside area from which she hails. A QC for ten years, Cherie Booth celebrates 30 years at the Bar this year. She heads a host of charities and public bodies, from Barnardo's ( president) to Liverpool John Moores University (chancellor). Although some compare her unfavourably with Margaret Thatcher's discreet consort, Sir Denis, who got a baronetcy, Cherie has a better claim on a title because of her public work. Is she less worthy than Baroness Falkender, former Labour premier Harold Wilson's secretary? Or, Baroness Jay, daughter of his successor, James Callaghan? But Baroness Booth would be a controversial nomination the first time a prime minister had honoured his wife with a title.

My source says: 'I'm not sure it's a great idea. Some of our people notably former chief whip Derek Conway and Shadow Home Secretary David Davis look positively terrifying when they smile.'
