Summary
TUESDAY night's surprise Commons defeat for Tony Blair may owe something to Tory leader David Cameron's fondness for the West Wing, the American TV series based on life in a fictional White House. Last Friday's episode featured a cleverly engineered Capitol Hill ambush, with sneaky Democrats fooling dastardly Republicans into thinking there was no vote happening by hiding in their offices. Labour's whips were apparently caught out by a lastminute Tory decision to slap a three-line whip on Tuesday's vote, forcing their MPs to turn up. No wonder Downing Street is so cross: Mr Blair's aides are also West Wing fans they even have a signed photo of the show's fictional White House press secretary CJ Cregg on their wall.
