EXTROVERT author, broadcaster and former Tory MP Gyles Brandreth tells me he'll consider putting himself up for Boris Johnson's plum seat in Henley, Oxfordshire. 'I received a letter from a party activist there saying I would have strong support. I have already committed to promoting my new book (about Oscar Wilde) in 16 countries but if the timing is right - and my friends and family agree - I'll consider it.' Judging by his reception at The Oldie's literary lunch yesterday - full of Home Counties types - his chances are good.

SHOULDN'T Tony Blair speak out on behalf of his beleaguered party? A former supporter, novelist Robert Harris, writing in The Guardian, calls Blair's current invisibility 'a symptom of the selfishness and indifference to others that have always been the least attractive marks of his personal and political style'. Perhaps Labour could dip into its much depleted coffers and offer the ex-PM a six-figure speaking fee.
