THE PATIENT WHEN I was five, I used to feel strange about once a week, as though I was going to sneeze but never did. Then, for about a minute, I was unable to respond to anything around me, even though I was totally aware.

Sometimes, without knowing why, I'd pause in the middle of the road when traffic was coming; and once, I moved forward just as a train was approaching the platform and had to be hauled back by my belt. It was terrifying for my parents.

Shortly afterwards, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. The messages between my brain cells were being disrupted -- in my case, causing this feeling that I was going to sneeze (known as an 'aura'), and then the 'absences' (which are a type of seizure).
