Summary

SVEN Goran Eriksson put the Fariagate scandal behind him yesterday and urged England to 'hit the ground running' before next month's World Cup qualifiers.

The head coach was optimistic as he looked ahead to the friendly a week today against Ukraine at Newcastle's St James'Park, despite knowing he is without key players. 'This is a big game for us,' he said. 'We have important qualifying matches against Austria and Poland next month. Playing against Ukraine and players like Sergei Rebrov is the ideal preparation.' The Swede hinted there will be new faces in the squad. And with Wayne Rooney unavailable because of a broken toe and Paul Scholes retired from international football, there is certain to be another chance for Tottenham's Jermain Defoe. Changes are also imminent at the FA, who have drawn up their own shortlist of candidates for the chief executive's post after becoming suspicious of the headhunters who recommended former bosses Adam Crozier and Mark Palios.
