MANCHESTER UNITED'S interest in Steven Defour was revealed in embarrassing circumstances yesterday after the player divulged details of a letter from Sir Alex Ferguson. The United boss wrote to Defour, 21, wishing the Standard Liege midfielder well after he broke a bone in a foot last month. Ferguson said: 'Dear Steven, I heard that you have a serious injury. You probably don't feel at your best, and you'll have lots of doubts in your mind. But don't worry, as everything will turn out fine. You will have to work hard to make your comeback, but then I will follow your performances closely.

'I will certainly keep in contact with Standard, and I hope that your mental strength holds out.' Although the letter was sent through Defour's club, it once again raises questions over Ferguson being in contact with potential transfer targets -- PSV Eindhoven complained in the past about how he courted Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jaap Stam and Arjen Robben -- and follows controversy over the recent Paul Pogba deal. Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton are all interested in the Pounds 15m-rated Defour, who said: 'Alex Ferguson went through the official channels, sending the letter via Standard. I don't like to boast about it, but I think the interest in me is terrific. 'I don't want people to think that I already believe myself to be a United player, as that is not the case. But if they make an approach for me, then of course I could easily imagine myself to be one.' .
