Summary
GETTING a good night's sleep could make your workout more effective. A Stanford University study looked at the sleeping patterns of sporty females. On average, the women were getting six to eight hours sleep a night, which they thought was adequate. However, when they were asked to increase this to ten hours, their performance improved significantly - in tests, they were able to run faster, their hand-eye co-ordination was improved (they were able to hit tennis balls more accurately) and they had greater arm strength. The researchers said this is because during sleep the body releases a hormone which stimulates muscle growth and repair. Lack of sleep slows the hormone release.
The researchers concluded that getting enough sleep is as important in getting fit as the exercise itself and good diet. Indeed, a lack of it could make your workouts less effective.See the full content of this document
