Summary

FLAG-WAVING by politicians is usually a distress signal, a sign that distractions are replacing serious policies. Alex Salmonds proposal to fly the Saltire on public buildings in Scotland all the year round and to hoist it on equal terms with the Union Flag even on the 18 days of the year when the UK flag is customarily displayed is a return to the politics of the student union.

Mr Salmond has surprised critics by pursuing sensible policies, most recently his abandonment of Jack McConnells absurd anti- sectarianism campaign. So it is disappointing to find the First Minister coat-trailing over the issue of flags and reminding us of the underlying mindset of the SNP. He is trying to downgrade the Union Flag and everything it stands for, largely banishing it from the Scottish landscape. In doing so, he insults all those Scots who fought, and the many who died, under that flag.
