Summary


WHEN I was a teenager in the mid-Sixties, my mother and I took a bus trip to Romford Market.

On the way there, my mother remarked that she hoped she had stubbed out her cigarette properly before leaving the house. We decided she must have done so and thought no more about the matter. At the market, Mum bought a lovely black furry hat and proudly wore it on the journey home. We sat on the upper deck so she could smoke, but her musical Swiss lighter wouldn't work properly and putting it next to her ear and clicking continuously, the lighter suddenly ignited and set fire to her new hat and hair.
