QUESTION In The English Seaside by Peter Williams, there's a picture of a wrecked boat called the Creteblock, described as one of the first concrete boats. Were many of these vessels made?

THE Creteblock was one of six ferro-cement tugboats built by John Ver Mehr Co. of Shorehamby-Sea for use in World War I. Six others were built by various companies throughout Britain but the war ended before the vessels were ready for use and orders for 12 further tugs were cancelled.

The Creteblock was scrapped after the war, but two of the tugs, Creteboom and Cretegaff, are here in Ireland. Creteboom is an abandoned hulk on the River Moy near Ballina, Co. Mayo. The other is at Carlingford Marina in Co.
