FORD, the only one of Detroit's 'big three' car producers to decline a US government bailout, is on the road to recovery after racing to a Pounds 1.4bn second quarter profit.

The group's move out of the red was mainly due to gains from reducing its huge debts to Pounds 15.7bn, down from Pounds 19.4bn at the end of March.
