Summary
SWINE flu might be striking terror (or at least mild anxiety) into the hearts of millions, but there is a disease out there which evokes fear of literally biblical proportions. Yes, the plague is back. In fact, it never went away. As a disease, it progresses rapidly and relentlessly, starting with a cough and a high fever, followed by death within around 24 hours. Human-to-human infection is tragically easy, and mortality rates without treatment (the disease is easily cured with antibiotics, if administered in time) are close to 100 per cent. No wonder the Chinese authorities are taking typically heavyhanded measures to control an outbreak of the pneumonic form of the disease in Qinghai Province. Following the deaths of three people, a strict quarantine area has been imposed this week.
Plague is carried by fleas, which live in the fur of several rodents (marmots, pictured, in the case of the current outbreak). It comes in several forms, including bubonic plague, which causes the lymph nodes to swell dramatically.See the full content of this document
