AMERICAN adventurer Steve Fossett made a fortune in the financial services industry, spending it on a quest for world records, including five non-stop circumnavigations of the Earth, as a longdistance solo balloonist, a sailor and solo pilot of fixed- wing aircraft.

At 8.45am on Monday, September 3, 2007, he took off from Flying M Ranch private airstrip near Smith Valley, Nevada, 30 miles south of Yerington, on a pleasure flight in a Bellanca Super Decathlon singleengine aircraft -- and failed to return.
