ROYAL Bank of Scotland head Sir Fred Goodwin will waste no time in wielding the axe after his consortium clinched victory in the protracted Pounds 49bn takeover battle for ABN Amro.

Goodwin - know as Fred the Shred for his zealous cost cutting - plans to sack ABN chief executive Rijkman Groenink and the rest of the Dutch's bank's management board and install his own team of senior executives from RBS and bid partners Fortis and Santander.
