THE satellite navigation was set for Ahascragh but it might as well have been directing me to Brigadoon. Somewhere on the N4, a few kilometres before Balli -nasloe, I was commanded to turn right on to a road barely wide enough for a single car and with grass growing where you might more usually expect to see a broken white line.

This is east Galway, all flat, umber bogland dotted with woods and, as you finally approach the village itself, large, stand- alone houses that smell of new money.
