GEORGE BURLEY'S reign as Scotland manager gets under way against Croatia at Hampden tonight. With the looming distraction of a crucial Old Firm encounter and the apathy that normally accompanies friendlies anyway, the atmosphere in the national stadium will be far removed from the side's last outing there against Italy.

Nevertheless, this game, like the others lined up against the Czech Republic and Northern Ireland, is essential if Burley is to set his stamp upon the team before the World Cup qualifying campaign gets under way. The new boss knows that he will have to find replacements for some of his older squad members and the absence of several first picks will give a few of the fringe players more of an opportunity to show what they have to offer.
