EVERY morning, Miriam Woolcombe gets up at 5am so she can fit in two hours of ice skating practice before school. The 12-year-old, a Scottish champion, practises 12 hours a week and dreams of one day winning a national title.

But now she fears her hopes could be dashed after council officials announced plans to axe her local ice rink. The closure comes as councils across Scotland make drastic cuts to vital sporting facilities and activity programmes as they desperately try to save cash.
