IN 1956, readers helped our baby, John (the Daily Sketch's 'Heartbreak Baby') get the heart surgery he so desperately needed through the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

His story told the world that a heart bypass machine, the Gibbon- type pump, could take over the job of pumping blood around the body while surgeons were repairing a hole between the ventricles of a baby's heart.
