YOUNG strawberry plants, grown from last year's runners, can now be planted out in the garden. You can also plant rooted runners, known as crowns, 30-45cm apart. Planting through black polythene will warm the ground, reduce weeds and pest problems. Covering with clear polythene cloches will help to protect the crops but ensure cloches are removed often to allow insects to pollinate the blooms.
