MORECAMBE'S refusal to allow Cork City speak to Sammy McIlroy about the vacant managerial post at Turner's Cross appears to leave the way clear for David Geddis to succeed Alan Mathews.

City chairman Tom Coughlan yesterday contacted the League Two club to sound out McIlroy's interest, or otherwise, in the position. 'We had a call today from Cork City asking if they could speak to Sammy about the manager's position at Cork City but we have denied them permission to approach him,' said Morecambe chief executive Rod Taylor. Under former Northern Ireland international McIlroy, Morecambe lie 15th in League Two.
