THERE would surely have been no more chances. This was the moment when Andrew Strauss had to deliver or be consigned to an unfulfilled future as a batsman whose decline had been as rapid as his rise. He responded with the highest score of his Test career.

Strauss's 11th Test century may not have been his most fluent. It was not scored against the greatest of attacks nor in the most demanding of conditions. Yet his unbeaten 173 on the third day of the decisive third Test was priceless, not just for his own immediate career but also the health of a spluttering England side.
