They cough up frothy bloody liquid, they become delirious and usually pass rapidly into a coma, and die within a few hours...

This devastating description was given by Dr George Peacocke at the height of the second epidemic of Spanish Flu, an outbreak which spread to around 800,000 people in Ireland. Of those who contracted the virus, some 2.5 per cent died.
