WE ASSUMED our Saturday night in Istanbul must have coincided with some historic national celebration or, at the very least, a massively significant victory for one of the city's football teams.

Traffic had ground to a flag-waving, horntooting, car radio- blaring halt; boy racers were weaving in and out of over-heated vehicles on souped-up mopeds; pavements bulged with revellers and restaurants were doing such a roaring trade you wondered why on earth Turkey needs to improve its economy by joining the European Union.
