The mobster's criminal empire is estimated to be worth Pounds 200million yet he was able to claim legal aid for the case, which has cost the taxpayer up to Pounds 50million.

Sentencing Adams at the Old Bailey, Judge Timothy Pontius said the public would be shocked at having to foot the bill for his defence.

He ordered a root-and-branch investigation into his finances to ensure that Adams who could be free in three-and-a-half years does eventually pay for the costs of his legal team.
