Summary
WHAT a weekend! What an achievement! Eight Olympic golds in two stupendous days of rowing, cycling, swimming and sailing ??? a sprinkling of silver and bronze too ??? our most breathtaking performance in 100 years ??? third in the medal table, after China and the U.S ??? Savour the moment. It just doesn't get much better than this. After all, who could have expected such glittering prizes, when most of our sporting heroes have for years specialised in playing the part of the gallant loser? But not this time. Two golds and a world record for Rebecca Adlington; our coxless four showing 'something primeval' to overhaul the Australians; flying Scotsman Chris Hoy's dominance of the cycling which could yet see him win his third Beijing gold on Tuesday. Not to mention Ben Ainslie's third consecutive Olympic championship.
