THE GP service should be a source of reassurance for patients. But in the Brave New World conjured up by the Labour Government, it has too frequently become a cause for anxiety, distress, even tragedy.

Until recently, people could expect a doctor from their local general practice to be available to provide care or advice for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. That level of support was one of the cornerstones of the NHS, and was rightly cherished by the public.
