I WORKED in the construction industry in the Republic up until April - and it was obvious to me then that the building boom couldn't last. The cost of housing was way out of control and the developers were making vast sums on the backs of young people trying to get their first house.
These same developers employed thousands of foreign workers on the minimum wage. Many were unskilled, so their work was poor quality, resulting in shoddy finishing.
