ALISTAIR Darling is fully justified in launching a double- barrelled assault on the High Street banks' behaviour. Despite being supported with a mountain of taxpayers' money, the bankers have shown themselves to be more interested in feathering their nests than supporting the small businesses and households that provide the backbone of Britain's prosperity.

Last autumn, the Government injected Pounds 37billion of taxpayers' money directly into the banks by buying shares in the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), where it now owns 70 per cent, and Lloyds Banking Group, where it controls 43 per cent.
