MINISTERS were last night accused of offering 'billions for bankers but cutbacks for kids' as the Dail debated the cuts at Crumlin children's hospital.

Fine Gael's health spokesman Dr James Reilly called the cutbacks - aimed at saving E9.6m - 'needlessly cruel' and warned they would cost the State more in the long run.

The debate follows the Irish Daily Mail's campaign against the budget cuts, which have caused further delays, and suffering, for thousands of children awaiting vital surgery.

In her first Dail statement about the Crumlin cuts, Health Minister Mary Harney defended her plans, saying that the Crumlin was 'only' being asked to take a 3 per cent budget cut.
