HARRY Secombe used to have an annual charity cricket match in the Seventies, close to his home in Cheam, Surrey.

One Sunday, my father and I had enjoyed a good visit to the pub, then lunch with wine, and saw no reason to curtail our imbibing. Pubs closed during the afternoon then, but there was a bar at the cricket ground.
