STEPHEN Hawking's second wife Elaine staged an astonishing Valentine's Day stunt in response to those who accuse her of cruelty towards the scientist.

She tied a red, heart-shaped balloon emblazoned with the words 'I love you' to his motorised wheelchair then took him to lunch at a Thai restaurant near their home in the centre of Cambridge.
