Summary

ARE YOU suffering from hair loss? If so, you could be deficient in a vitamin called biotin, which is essential for healthy growth. Research has shown that a protein called avidin, found in raw egg white, prevents biotin being absorbed. So avoiding foods with raw egg, such as mayonnaise and chocolate mousse, might help. The good news is that cooking de-activates avidin, so a boiled egg won't affect your hair in the slightest.

SOFT or brittle nails could be a sign that you lack magnesium. We need magnesium in order to help another nutrient, Vitamin D, absorb calcium from food. So it doesn't matter how much calcium you eat - if there's no magnesium to help your body absorb it, then you won't get many of the benefits. The problem is that the Western diet is very low in magnesium, probably because the food with the highest concentration of it is offal, which few people eat these days. Other good sources include pumpkin seeds, spinach and salmon.
