WORCESTER were backed by the British Horseracing Authority after abandoning their meeting yesterday amid accusations of inadequate planning for the heatwave. Charlie Egerton's Highland Laddie collapsed twice after running in the opening race and needed about 900 gallons of water to revive him.

But BHA spokesman Paul Struthers said it was the heat rather than delays in replenishing water supplies which forced the course to call off the rest of the card. He said: 'It was done on welfare grounds, not because of a lack of water. 'The temperature in the stables was 85 degrees but, in the stable yard, it was well over 90. The horses were getting dehydrated before they'd even left the stable yard.' Brendan Powell (pictured), who saddled Mystic Storm in the first race, said: 'It's the hottest I've known it here. I've ridden in Japan and it was as hot as this but they were well prepared and washed down the horses at the start.' Fergus Cameron, the clerk of a course usually afflicted by too much water, said he had never experienced conditions like it. He said: 'The horse needed 800-900 gallons to revive him.'
