THE crisis engulfing Charles Clarke deepened last night as it emerged that 1,500 more foreign prisoners are being held in jail than the Government admits.

As he desperately resisted new demands to resign, the Home Office admitted it does not even know the nationality of 900 inmates all of them suspected to be from overseas.
