Heaven On Horseback! ; There's Only One Way to See the Breathtaking High Andes, Says Our Writer-Turned-Cowboy, and That's From the Saddle

'Go! Go!' screams Sally, our guide, and our horses need little prompting.

A huge, black bull lowers his horns and looks as if he is about to give chase, when a supremely nonchalant cowboy gallops in between it and us with a lasso, and proceeds to cajole it back to the herd.

It has been a tense, unnerving few minutes. And we all feel utterly exhilarated.

Until a few weeks ago, I had never been in a saddle at anything greater than trotting speed - and that was when I was a child.

Yet, here I am on a horse, high in the Andes, with a bunch of whooping, poncho-clad lunat...
