THE ' superbug' crisis faced by Scotland's hospitals was highlighted by figures yesterday showing that one in five patients who died after surgery had contracted an infection.

Of the 1,854 patients who died following an operation in 2004, infections contributed to 376, with the majority of these being Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs).
