A DEADLY stomach bug has claimed 12 lives at a leading specialist hospital and could pose a major threat to the Health Service, doctors warned yesterday.

Cases of the infection, called Clostridium difficile, have soared nationwide from just over 1,200 in 1990 to more than 43,000 last year.
