Could you give an electric shock to someone - or allow a doctor to drive a nail into your brain?

Amazingly, these were among the horrifying tests volunteers underwent for Shock Treatment, a new TV reality show. Forty people each spent two days in a disused Victorian asylum, where they took part in a series of extraordinary experiments to show how extreme fear can overpower the victims' minds. Here, two of them describe their experiences: Shaun Kelly, a 36-yearold account manager for a software company, lives in Gosforth, Newcastle. He says: I'm an adrenalin junkie, who enjoys that feeling of excitement fear creates in the pit of my stomach. Even though I'm scared of heights, I'm always first in the queue for the biggest roller coaster. So, when I saw an ad looking for people who enjoy the buzz of feeling scared to take part in a TV show, I applied straight away. But I had very little idea what I was letting myself in for - and the people involved refused to tell me. Because I didn't have a clue what was in store, my mind ran wild and, by the time the show started, I'd begun to wonder why I was doing it.

On the way, I chatted nervously to the taxi driver, who told me he was dropping me off at an abandoned mental asylum. But then he suddenly stopped the taxi because there was a person lying in the road. For a split second, it occurred to me that this was something to do with the show. But when the driver got out to investigate, the man leapt up and punched him in the face - I saw blood coming from his nose. Then I realised the man was carrying a massive knife.

Immediately, all thoughts that this was a set-up disappeared. ...
