The grey Neptune Collonges leads his stablemates in the early stages of the contest. The pace is steady and consistent, with the giant, 17.1 hands Denman travelling comfortably on his tail with a ground-devouring stride. Kauto Star is also galloping within himself, with Ruby Walsh seemingly happy over the opening half mile of the race, tucked behind the leading pair.

An enormous leap at the 12th fence in front of the stands propels Denman to the front and Sam Thomas takes it as a signal to press the accelerator. It is the decisive move and the roar from a record 67,000 crowd acknowledges this.
