How We Beat the Clock

But today the picture has changed. There are now about 82,000 single, 30-something women a year having babies without a partner on the scene.

That's almost double the number of a decade ago.

These women have all come to the same conclusion: that they're not willing to wait for Mr Right to come along before having the family they crave. They don't have time.

They're aware their fertility is diminishing (though many are surprised to discover it halves by the age of 35, then halves again by 40).

A new documentary series for Channel 4, The Baby Race, follows 30 such women over the course of a year, and here we speak to five of them. They've chosen various methods from donor insemination or one- night stands to overseas adoption in their bid to become mothers.
