ALL NIGHT long we had sheltered behind a table in our blacked- out hotel room, listening to what sounded like a runaway freight train roaring straight through the building.

As chunks of roof ripped away and smashed against cars, we prayed the breezeblock walls would hold. By 10am on Saturday, we thought we'd been granted deliverance.

Hurricane Rita had howled her worst, and now, as the wind dropped and a strange calm descended over Beaumont, Texas, it seemed safe to emerge from our battered refuge and survey the surrounding damage.
